I'd Suggest not using any sand or sea water in a home aquarium it's most likely polluted water and has lots of parasites. Not only that but in most places it is illegal. I'd suggest visiting a LFS and purchasing some live sand and mixing your own RO/DI water with Instant ocean, Kent Marine, Seachem, Coralife, etc.

What size tank? if you could provide some details on your plan many of us will be able to assist you.

I've used natural sea water in aquariums before, and would do it again if I were near the ocean. You're in far more danger of getting parasites on the rock and fish from the LFS than by collecting sea water. As long as you're not near any industry, marina, or floodwater runoff area, you should be fine. I will suggest that you only collect it at full high tide.

As for the sand, I wouldn't use beach or near-shore sand. Probably not much benefit there. If you had access to a reef, that would be different, but possibly also illegal, depending on your location and local laws.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Natural SW collected from a clean area I see no issue with. I too used to do it when I lived in Ca.

Sand not a good idea as others have posted. It may look clean, but many inverts start there life cycle in a plankton larvae stage, you do not want to introduce that to your tank. Rinsing the sand with FW will kill the beneficial bacteria so it's a mot point to use collected sand.
