Sand from the beach?

    Hey guys im broke can i just go to the beach and get some sand- clean it reallyyyyy thoroughly and then put it in my tank? the tank isnt set up yet, the beach sand would go thru the cycle with the new rock and stuff

    I don't know. But personally I would feel bad taking a bunch of sand from the beach...

    Only if you can be absolutely sure you get all the contaminates out the sand. I know the bay has had some oil spills not too long ago. I personally wouldnt try it. There is a lot that you would need to do to get the sand "clean". Some things would be easy to clean out but others I dont think you could remove. Just my thoughts on it.

    Makes you Wonder where the sand you buy comes from then ... ;) LOL...

    Personally Id buy it myself. Never know what you could get in that sand, then again could be benificial or harmful, never know!

    Yeah, but they at least have licenses, permits, etc. to collect the sand. Just my opinion!

    why didnt i think of that.. just go to the beach and start diggin lol..
    as of your question.. well I dont see a problem with it as long as the place you get it is not were all the people are at. ( go to a place were its left alone most of the time to ensure you get the best i guess)..
    and yeah.. redgambit has a point there lol

    dont get caught its a big fine. i was trying to get sand for a sand box and got a warning but you never know

    thanks for the input guys! yeah ive been worried about getting if from a beach on the bay (that water can wipe out a continent ;) ) I really want to get the High Desert Play Sand from Home Depot but they dont sell it here in the Bay Area... maybe if i can pay someone to ship it to me from wherever they sell it? hmmm

    you have to be sure of the type of sand. some may contain silicates.
