Ok, I have read alot of posts on DSB vs non DSB. How much sand should I use in a 90gal, as well as how much of it should be live sand?

a inch or less in the tank. if you want a dsb don't put it in your tank make it in the fuge that way when it eventually becomes a detriment you can take it out easily and replace it.

personally i would say 50 lbs is probably enough for me, i like it shallow less problems

only a small portion "should" be live, the rest should be regular, the live will spread.

i quoted should because if you have live rock you could forgo the live sand completely. i mean really how much living stuff survives in a air tight, unheated bag for months. maybe some anerobic bacteria? nothing that uses oxygen is still around

Pretty much what my LFS said, just wanted to make sure.. I do have a fuge setup that I incorporated into my sump. Just sand or have a mud base then sand?? My sump is 40gal, the fuge side is 17 1/2" D x 12 3/4 W x 13" H...

mud is to expensive for my taste, to really be a viable option. all natural unscented clay kitty litter is the same stuff the mud is made out of just nothing alive in it. personally i would just use sand.

kitty litter is either zeolite or diatomite. which have been used in planted fresh water tanks for years.

if you do mud 3-4 inches(i think)

sand is 6 inches, don't go under or it wont do its job, and there is no benefit to having it deeper

John I have a 90g with deep sand bed.About 3 or four inches. In my 20g refuge I have only about 1to 2 inches. 1 inch mud 1 inch sand. I used crushed coral and sand in dt I wish I would not have used the crushed coral. It tends to show the dirt where the sand is to fine
    to pick it up.
