During my water changes I've been having to siphon the top layer of my sand to get the red slime. I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of the red slime. It's better but still on the rocks some. Put in my CUC today but they aren't doing much yet. May take a few days. My question is I'm getting thin on my sand bed. I have a 15 lb bag of crushed coral I can use or should I get more sand and add it into the tank ? Thanks for any help.

Crushed coral is fine as long as you vacuum regularly. Also, keep in mind that you cannot house sand-sifters or certain burrowing critters with CC.

I'll probably just get more sand. Just rinse and add ?

If you'd like. Rinse it well!!!

It'll help if you get a length of PVC pipe; put the pipe in the tank and hold it just over the sand bed - pour the new sand into the pipe to get it to the bottom of your tank without causing too much of a mess.

That was a concern. The sand storm. Lol. That's a great idea. Thanks.

that is a great idea!! Just my .02......I'd be hesitant to add sand on top of red slime though.....I'd wait until you got a real handle on the red slime and the sand is pretty clear before adding something on top of it....I hope that makes sense......I love crushed coral (I have a mixture with regular sand) but I do vacuum a section during each water change and it really does hold alot of detritus in it that I can see when I vacuum.....with a mixture I have a few sand dweller snails that still are able to churn it up.

+1 on that. Be ready for some aquascaping to level it all out, moving rocks and getting the new stuff all around.
