Last night after I cleaned my tank and turned the system back on I noticed water coming from only 1 out flow back into the tank and was not alternating between the two out flows back into the tank. Took my SCWD off to see what the deal was as I never have really looked at it before since I had someone put the tank together for me about 1 yr ago and could hear a little piece rattling around inside of it. I could see a little propeller not attached and is the piece I was hearing rattling around. Is this piece of equipment broken and need to be replaced. Can't open the SCWD as this is a sealed piece except for the 3 areas where water comes in and out. Thoughts!

Is this the squid ? I googled & found this - not sure if its helpful.

    MAINTENANCE
    a. Provided all instructions and tips are followed in the previous pages of this manual, your SCWD is designed and manufactured to be trouble-free. It is recommended, however, that you inspect your SCWD for general serviceability whenever maintaining your aquarium.

    b. Inspect your SCWD and all hoses and their connections for leaks.

    c. To assure proper water flow, inspect inlet hoses, outlet hoses, and nozzles for algae and slime build-up, and clean if required.

Helpful Tip - To prevent harm to fish and invertebrates, never use soap or detergents when cleaning your aquarium and supporting equipment.

    4. TROUBLESHOOTING
    a. There are very few things that can go wrong with the SCWD: If a problem should occur, please follow the recommendations for the specific conditions listed on the following page. Most problems are attributed to water that has not been sufficiently filtered prior to flowing through the SCWD. As mentioned earlier as a Special Note in section 1, Installation, water should always be filtered prior to entering the SCWD.

Symptom - Switching speed to slow
Remedy - Check pump for proper flow/pressure rating

    Symptom - Switching speed inconsistent
Remedy - Check hoses for algae and slime obstructions.

Symptom - SCWD is noisy or stops abruptly, stops and starts sporadically
Remedy - Foreign debris is lodged in switching mechanism. Flush out unit to dislodge debris.

Yah, your are on the right track but I didn't see any of those as being a problem...plus was not what I wanted to mess around with last night at 11pm but will have to investigate more into into it...at least the water flow that is coming out is opposite than my powerhead so their is water circulation in the tank.

Sorry to hear about your equipment troubles.

I have seen those units many times and wondered how they would perform.

Here's a bump for you in the hopes someone else knows a bit more about them.

Just off the top of my head I would suggest looking into the company information and see what kind of warranty is offered. If not, a lot of companies will still work with you on out-of-warranty products - i.e. - discount on repairs or replacements.

    Best of luck . . .

There is no propeller in there to crack off. Check and see if something is missing from the pump that could have travelled up inside and got lodged.

I've been using the same three I bought when they first came out. I don't remember how many years that is.... greater than 6.
