I was curious on what you guys and gals use to store your reef salt once you have opened it. I know some of you may buy salt in bulk in the 5 gallon buckets and others buy it in the bags. For the type I buy it comes in 25lb bags and I want a container to put the salt in to keep the moisture out. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you buy it in bags, just pour the bags into a five gallon bucket with a sealed lid.

Kind of seems like a dumb question I know lol I was just curious and wanted to keep the moisture out to keep the integrity of the salt. I guess I can spare a bucket and a lid of the ones that I already have.

I like the bags. Just use a twist tie to close up if you don't use a whole bag. Do you live in a humid part of the country?

I would not say that it is really humid but it does fluctuate. Not that it goes from one extreme to the other or anything like that. I'm in Illinois so the humidity in the warmer months that we are in now can be problem sometimes.

I use Kent Marine salt. They used to sell in five gallon buckets, now its bags. I use the old five gallon bucket with lid to store salt.

Also, I have forgotten to put the lid on a couple times, salt gets hard. I break it up using a screw driver and all seemed good, even when harden.

Anyone have any insight as to if the integrity/profile of the salt is compromised once humidity reaches it and is hardened or am I just possibly over thinking this?

Over thinking it. I've never had an issue with my salt in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid.

The only problem that I can see is that the calcium and carbonate could bond and lower both. Not sure how major of a problem this is though.
