I have read several postings about drilling and using pvc pipes that are fastened to plates to secure rock scapes. Would it be bad to use silicone to secure dry base rock together before putting it in the water?

Not too sure about the silicone and what effects it may have directly on the live rock. Maybe look into the epoxy that is available at BRS.com. I believe you can usr super glue as well but the epoxy is best IMO.

I would only use it on the dry base rock i am buying and then add the lr once the formation is completed. I will definitely check out BRS.com

I have made many rock designs and never have used silicone. I would think its not a good idea. Its probally not bad for it but its not nessary or good for it either.

IMO silicone wouldnt be the best. Mostly because the lack of strength when applied to something like rocks. You can use marine grade epoxy, like west systems, it will be non-toxic once it cures. I think the best way I have noticed is drilling holes for PVC and securing it in the hole with marine epoxy. then it just falls into place.

ok, say I drilled a hole in the LR, stuck a piece of pvc in. What would I secure the pvc to, once in the tank?

I would think epoxy would work best unless building a tall structure, which I want to do. So this brings me back to the pvc question...

You epoxy the pvc to the bottom piece of rock. The top piece of rock has a hole drilled that the pvc slides into. And i fail to see why the epoxy wouldnt work for tall structures, it is going to be the strongest stuff out there

I didn't say it would wouldn't work. I said I thought it might not work as well(as maybe pvc). just because of things maybe being top-heavy. Although if I also have them hold from above(using eggcrate & zip ties), which I will be doing, it should be fine(I think). But thanks.
