i would guess when you start seeing some coraline growth on it. i dont know how long it takes, i would imagine that would depend on your tank params

Coraline has nothing to do with it....
How long has the rock been in the water?

Read it wrong.. Bit no biggie..

You can tell by color, things growing on it.. changes, etc.. Many things..

When it starts to look like the liverock you seeded it with..
coraline growth can happen fast, slow, or never.... Liverock doesn't have to have
    coraline growth .. Right..?

    Later, Larry

Ooh yay, a what is live rock thread.
Coraline is a good sign on live rock, but doesn't mean it's "seeded". After the rock/tank have cycled, the rock is "live" in that it carries the beneficial filtering bacteria that consume ammonia, nitrates and nitrites from the water. Diatoms, cyano, macro, and then coraline would come next in the cycling process (which really takes a year to fully complete assuming proper care).

Great care should ALWAYS be taken to not expose live rock which has coraline, macro growth, or beneficial bacteria to air. This will kill it and cause it to cycle. I recommend buckets full of tank water to move the rock into the tank.

Corraline can start at any time, i have read to get good strong growth keep your iodine and magnesium levels high (but not more than is recommended). Iodine should be between 0.05-0.07ppm and magnesium should be three times the level of calcium mine is at 1300ppm. Also good lighting helps.
