I have a Reef Octopus NWB150 6" in-sump protein skimmer in my sump and it isn't pulling anything - can't seem to maintain a foam head. It's been running for about a month. Water levels are spot on according to the lines on the body and it's bubbling away... My thought is that this may be because of the light bioload (3 small fish and a few small corals) relative to the 130g water volume. Nitrates are low; less than 5.

We're running carbon in a reactor at the moment, but haven't cranked up the GFO or anything yet. Only other filtration is a filter sock, 100 lbs of LR and about 60 lbs of sand - both from Marcorocks. There's a little bit of a diatom bloom in the fuge, but nothing spectacular.

    Thoughts?

If you don't clean new equipment, any residual oils will break down the foam.

Ooh, good thought. I ran it in a vinegar solution for about a week before we put saltwater in the system (2 gallons vinegar to 130 gallons of H20). I figured that would do it. I'll go wipe the neck down real good and see if that helps.

    Thanks Jerry.
