I have a 30g set up and I started out with the bio-wheel penguin filter and it started making the most annoying noises. I'm thinking either get the marineland emperor series or go with just a skimmer and my live rock. I have about 30lbs of live rock. If i go with just the skimmer and live rock will it keep the tank clean, or will i need something else?

I think after reading I'm gonna go with the Coralife 65 seems people prefer that over the seaclone.

I've got a 80 gal FOWLR and i run a skimmer and emperor series on it. ( I may take the filter off soon ) Im using it basically for its media cartridges that i fill with carbon. Im sure the water would be pretty clean if i delete the filter from the equation so IMO you should be okay with just a skimmer and live rock for filtration. With the Seaclone skimmer i suggest you pass and go with something else. That was my first skimmer when i just started my tank a almost a year ago and did not no what to expect or what to look for in the skimmers performance. I am currently running an Octopus 100F HOB and the skimmate coming from that is far better/ or should i say dirtier then the Seaclone could ever pull out.
    Good Luck with your tank!

Yeah the one I had started making the loudest noises so I'm just gonna take it back. I decided to go it the coralife for the skimmer instead ordered it this morning.

I have the base rock in there now, been there for a couple of days. Would it hurt if I added a few more lbs or should I wait. I currently have 30lbs of tahiti base rock

I have a Seaclone 100 on my 100 gallon tank and it has performed perfectly fine in my opinion. Don't have anything to compare it to however. Although, it does seem to produce lots of small bubbles from the gel based stress coats for a day or two after water changes.
