So I got a couple sponges today but I heard sometime ago that they aren't supposed to touch air/come out of the water or they would die. Is that true or not?

Very true fact, air will most likely kill off the sponge, and for that reason you have to be very careful

Wow... that sure sucks because all the sponges did touch air when I got em. I had to take them from one tank and then to a cooler to bring them home. They all had contact with air for about a second...:-[

try to turn them upside down and shake them slowly, basicly you are trying to get out any air bubbles that may have collected in them. From now on when moving them or buying them make sure that they continue to stay submersed in water while being bagged as well as when being taken out of the bag into your tank. Hopefully you are lucky and no air got trapped in the sponge.
