When you do water changes, you should try to match the exact parameters of the water in your tank. You can also make adjustments if needed (salinity is low in the tank= you make the water change a little higher in salinity).

The biggest thing is not to change too much at once- consistency is key

What's the best way to do a quarantine setup?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge here. Trying to learn though.
    THanks for the help!

No apology needed- that's why 3reef is here!

I have never had one personally (though I should), you just need something basic...

    • 10 gallon tank filled with RO/DI saltwater (params should match the display tank)
    • HOB filter
    • Small Heater
    • Air stone
    • A net (separate from the one for your main tank)
Typically, you would take water from your main aquarium and let the tank cycle, but since you have an outbreak of disease, you can't do that. To be honest, I'm not sure if there is an easy way to cycle the new tank in a day or two. I know with freshwater you can buy stuff that makes the tank fish safe immediately and by-passes the cycle, but no sure of SW.

Also, could my canister filter be the cause of all this? I heard they are nitrate beasts. It's a fluval fx5.

I wanted to sump but my father thought that the canister would be just as good. From what i've gathered so far, my canister filter and bakpak2 arent doing the trick......

We've gone round's ab the canister vs sump but he had a 200 gallon tank back in the late 90's when I was a little kid ran by a canister setup and swears by it. I told him times have changed since then lol.

You will need to have an fresh water dip/bath at the same temp and pH as the display water, if you go that route.

Honestly I would not dip/bath those fish, unfortunately when they have that advanced a case of what maybe marine ich there is little hope, just being honest. The stress of a bath would probably kill them quicker.

    Good luck to you.

listen, i would call the lfs and see if he has a tank already set up for ich and take the fish back to him, he may be able to save them, please don't put the fish in fresh water it will kill them. take them back and cycle your tank, it's not ready for fish or anything else with ammonia readings, its not ready.

I don't know for sure, this is more of a question. Couldn't he use a hospital tank with a salinity of say 1.017 to help get rid of the ick? I know of a LFS around here that runs all their fish only tanks around 1.017 just to help prevent ick.

I have to be honest, this is the route that I would take. I have corals in my tank and I usually shoot for 1.025 to 1.027. If I only had fish, I would go for 1.020.

An effective SG for the treatment of marine ich is 1.010 - 1.009.

Corailline is correct. Anything other than 1.009-1.010 SG is a complete waste of your time for trying to treat/prevent ich.

All very good advice. You can use Amquel+ to detoxify ammonia and nitrite to a safe level for fish. It doesn't cycle your tank, but does allow the nitrifying bacteria to grow (cycle your tank) without killing everything in the process.

Here's a good link where you can read up on what to do for the ich (if it's not too late to save the fish):

Hyposalinity / OST (Osmotic Shock Therapy)
