this might be a dumb question but......

So i got my first few frags of sps after switching to led lighting, and it seems like i'm getting EXCELLENT polyp extention but last night i turned the lights off for a while and i had to read something so i turned on my book light (tank is near my bed) and some of the light illuminated the tank enough for me to see that the polyps were still extended....does that mean its not getting enough light? i recently put the led further up becomes some of my zoos were getting burned...the sps looks very colorful and happy but i'm concerned that if the polyps are out even when the light is out it might not be getting enough? o.0 i have no idea. should i bring the light down more closer to the tank?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
It is all good, some corals show a lot more PE at night.

I have heard theories about decreased oxygen causing them expand to more in an effort to increase gas exchange, but I honestly think it is just a theory.

In nature, corals have a competitive advantage over algae, because their zoox photosynthesizes in the day and they eat at night. So, they are more productive than their competition. Sometimes corals learn to eat in the day in our tanks as well, however, in nature there is more food available at night. So, this seems very natural to me, unless I'm missing something?

idk i just thought it was unnatural to see the polyps extended all the time. for some reason i thought it might be unhealthy for it to not have an "off" time? o.0 i wasn't sure if that meant they werent getting enough light. I'm new to sps, i've kept softies for a long long time but sps is a new world for me :)

    Thanks for the info!

If you look at my tank day or night most of my acropora a furry little buggers. Now if they are not furry than I know something is off. Quickest way to see if an acropora is happy is check PE.

In my tank all the corals seem to have more polyp extension at night than durring the day. I remember watching one of those science channel shows saying most corals have their polyps retracted dieting the day to prevent them from being eaten by predators.

    That's in the wild
