I've got future plans for constructing a monster of 250+ gallons. ;D
But I figured I should start small and learn on a manageable tank before I took on more than I could handle.

    I've got a 75gal Oceanic w/ stand as a gift.
    Otherwise, I'm starting from scratch.
    Plans:
Reef tank with SPS and LPS.
    RO/DI tap filter
    40 gal sump/fuge w/ center return
    Calc/Kalk reactor
    MH lights w/ actinics
Heater/Chiller due to SE LA weather
    Oversized Skimmer
    Auto TO
100lbs LR w/ DSB in Fuge
    2 Tunze for circulation

    Overkill for the 75 gal?
There's so much information to sort through. It's hard to know where to start without any personal experience. I'm trying to learn as much as possible from the forums, but some Q&A sessions may be more beneficial.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes sound like a great start if your card can handle it. Always better to get the right stuff the first time.

Right now, I've got an internal debate.
1.) Get started and add stuff on as I go... probably the typical route.
2.) Wait until I've got everything purchased to set it up.
I'm excited and want to get started, but I think it may be a better decision to do one setup than have to add a bunch of mods later.

As far as lighting goes, I would get a Maristar 2x250w fixture with Galaxy ballasts, a really good setup.

You have the right idea with buying everything outright and setting up..
If you have plans on upgrading to the 250+ why not just go that route to begin with. It is easier with a larger tank once its set up, plus you will never recoup any of the initial investment on your 75.. Just my thoughts..

Oh, I misread that you already have the tank and stand.. then go that route.. you are doing it all right by me..

Since my tank isn't currently drilled, I can do anything I want.
    Any suggestions for overflow?
    Closed loop versus in-tank circulation?

I don't think I'll have room in my house for a 250; so, it'll have to wait until I move into my next house... On the other hand, the 75 will fit perfectly against a wall in my den. Plus, as you mentioned, I already have the tank and stand. It'll be easier to financially recover from a newb error on a 75g, and it's big enough to get some cool specimens and still have the manageable maintenance costs.

I would drill it and do something like a glass-holes. com overflow. It comes with everything necessary.. I had one on my 30 and loved it. Actually I think everyone I have ever heard that used one really like it..
