I've been advised to purchase the water my LFS sells to start my tank. I would think this was a good idea but before I drop a bunch of money on water I was wondering if it was really necessary, since it's the store that advised me to do it? Also, I'm not in a big hurry to lug 50 gals of water home if I don't have too. lol

*to clarify - the LFS sells salt water (at 1.90 a gal) and RO/DI water. I was thinking of buying the RO/DI water instead of the saltwater because of the price difference (.60 gal) and mixing my own salt. Would that be alright?

You'll make it out cheaper with the saltwater mixed. My LFS sells it @ $1.00/gal...look around. See if there are more stores around you. I was amazed how many I found that are not 'listed' in the phonebook or online. Just word-of-mouth.

If you dont have an RO unit then you'll definitely want to buy your water somewhere. Walmart does have it cheap, but no way of telling how old the filters are on the machine, so unless you have a TDS meter your not sure your getting what you pay for. If this is a trusted LFS I would go with their water.

The same caution applies to LFS water whether it's a trusted store or not. :)

At those prices you will have spent enough to buy a good RO/DI unit(about $150) in no time.

Arkansas... lol someone told me to check with a near by walmart but as far as I know our walmarts here don't carry saltwater fish. I'll double check though. And you may be right about the RO/DI filter... if I have one of those, then I just mix the salt by hand, right?
