Also, a larger skimmer does not equal more skimmate- it can still only remove the DOCs that are in your tank... unless you set it to wet-skim, in which case you only remove more water.

FWIW, this was not always the case, but over the past decade or so, the technology (and therefore, the efficiency of skimmers) has been improved so that today their ratings are pretty much spot-on.

 

Here's what I noticed while running the slim skim nano. The closer you have the skimmer placed next to any type of pump that pulls water...those pumps seem to pull macro bubbles out of the slim skim with ease.
The slim skim does NOT surface skim unless it's raised high enough so that only 1/4 of the vents are under water.

Ashevillian: Have you given any thought to going skimmerless?

 

I used to run skimmerless but the fact that it pulls out such nasty dark water is really appealing to me.. tells me what would still be in my tank if i werent to skim.

I just don't like the slim skim nano, its a really tight fit and its a constant battle to keep the pump clean. also yes, it doesn't surface skim very well

Going skimmerless would be kind of pointless since I already paid for this slim skim nano, but ya it's a big PITA.
