I've had a generic (I guess) in-tank UV sterilizer from PetSmart for quite some time now. I bought it during a parasite outbreak around a year ago. It was bulky, cumbersome, and pretty high maintenance, having several parts and cords and a sponge that needed to be removed and rinsed out almost daily.

I've long questioned its efficacy, but I left it on and running for the last year regardless. The tank has done well so there was no reason to shut it off (if it ain't broke...).

At the beginning of last month I was decluttering the tank and decided to take the UV sterilizer out. In the following month several patches of bubble algae have emerged. The stuff has absolutely taken off in the last month, plus the tank just looks plain grungy. As a side note, my water parameters haven't budged, Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrates all zero. Phosphates 0, pH 8.3.

Our setup is a 75 gallon reef tank with no sump (due to the stand). AquaC Remora Pro skimmer and a canister filter for charcoal, phos-x, etc... it's a Cascade 1200 model, so it should have roughly 315 GPH output under optimal conditions.

At any rate, I would just feel better with another, more expensive unit, as the last one I bought was a cheapo but I picked it up because I could have it in the tank same day {for the parasite outbreak) versus waiting for a better one to ship. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good inline UV sterilizer?

Here's the old UV sterilizer: Internal UV Sterilizer w/Power Head & Lamp Replacements - Fish - Free Ship - PetSmart Stay away LOL

Thanks Pink4miss! For now I put back the old PetSmart clarifier and things seem to be going well but I'm definitely going to check out that link more thoroughly. Go big or go home :)
