has anyone built one of these? I have added a coiled denitrifier that i built. It has been running for about 3 weeks but i see no change in my readings (160+ for the past month).

I keep reading about how well these work and have seen some with a separate aragonite chamber to also to add calcium and raise the ph.

    Anyone tackled this yet?

160+??? Nitrates?? You should have your water tested to verify the result. If it is accurate then I would say something is very wrong to cause that high of a nitrate reading.

i know. i am really frustrated. cut back on feedings, water changes, etc.

i am going to lfs this weekend to have it tested. i an using an API reef test kit. other tests seem in line. it went up from 20 to 40 in one week and 40 to 160 in two more weeks.

I am moving tank in two weeks and will be adding 50% new water, hopefully that will help.

Have you considered that maybe your live rock is leaching nitrates?

had not. it has been up and running for about one year now.

what would it be, just dead stuff built up on the rocks?

I'm thinking more that the rock may have absorbed the nitrates as a result of being in nasty water and is now leaching them out. You can test it out by putting a piece of your rock in some clean, nitrate free salt water for a day or so and then testing that water for nitrates.

I have one and I can honestly tell you that it worked. Actually the one I have are mixed aragonite and sulfur on two chambers but can also be seperated. Your nitrate though is really high. I think you should find out what's making your nitrate really high first.

I built one... and it works awesome! ;D

It took me from a consistant reading of 90 to ZERO in about 3.5 weeks and has kept me there ever since. It incorporates a layer of sulfur and a layer of coarse aragonite to raise pH / add calcium.

    Zzippper,

did you follow some plans or just wing it? I am looking for something to go by when building it.

Could I just use my TLF 150 and put the material in it?
