hi i am designing a sump for my 60 gallon reef. i put a picture of my idea. tank is above to the right of the sump. the sump is 29 gallons 30 inches long and 18 inches tall.
I really am wondering the best order for equipment in my sump and the size of baffles. Ill be putting T all valves on both my return and overflow tubes to control the flow if needed.
From the overflow the water will drain into the closest part of the sump to the tank, the right side. My baffles will be as close to the sump as possible. my skimmer is some heavy duty coralife one. Ill use three baffles after the skimmer to help with flow and bubbles. The first will start at the bottom and go up 14 inches. the second one will start at the top and go down 17 inches to just leave an inch space underneath and then ill have the third baffle right after the second, places in the same position at 14 inches as the first baffle. 1 inch between all baffles.
The next section of my sump will be for the refugium. Im not sure how to construct it yet but i was just going to leave a bunch of space for live rock and chaeto. I was wondering what would be the most cost efficient light to run over that. Im guessing some kind of cheap LED or really anything cheap anyone can suggest I would appreciate.
My final section is for my return. Just thought two baffles would do the same design as my first section.
I hope my illustration will help. I just want a nice simple sump with good turnover for my main tank and I want to build it properly to ensure maximum filtration efficiency. Please experts let me know what you think I relly appreciate all the help.
BTW i will be ordering my baffles as glass and can order baffles with teeth in them if that will be a better idea or something maybe just ordered one edge with teeth and instead of leaving an inch gap on the bottom of two of my bffles just go all the way to the bottom with the edge cut with the teeth out. I dont know the proper term for that kind of baffle so i drew a picture of it below my sump drawing.

You don't want high flow through your refuge so I would put it on the left with a slow flow from the overflow into it and the return section in the middle.

Baffles are fine, no rock in the refuge as it collect detritus and cause nitrates to go up. A 65W spiral compact fluorescent will do for lighting.

The skimmer and refuge can go in which ever side you want. Buy a return pump that moves 10 times the sump's volume at whatever head height you tank is at.

Might think about skipping n the ball valve on the overflow side. It restricts the flow to less than the diameter of your pipe and increases chances for a clogged valve(think snails, algae, etc). I have one on my overflow, only because I saw someone else on here do it and thought it was a good idea. But, I'll be removing it this week, and might suggest you just put one in the return pump side. Hopefully someone else will chime In on this.

    Agreed.

My DIY overflow actually has a 1&1/2inch ball valve- It's always wide open! And it should be, when you start restricing the flow like for noise reduction, etc., you'll probalby end up with an overflow on your DT!- As Jlobes refers to.

And, 2 and 10 meant to split the overflow, leaving one open- skimmer section, and one slower with a valve- fuge section.
    IMHO

And, how do you get that DT to hold the water when it's on the ceiling like that? ;-)

you saying leave the skimmer part open and just use a baffle for the fuge at the end?
