I have a 29 gal now as a fuge under my 113g (in progress) and my 46 will also tie into it and the sump.
My thoughts is to get a 20 long for the sump to sit beside it so the total dimensions for the fuge and sump will be 24x24 , leaving me a whole lotta space under the 113 for an ATO and whatever else I need down the road. Plus if I move and the tanks aren't quite in the same orientation I can reconfigure the 2 tanks.
    What do you think?
Good idea or do you see any potential problems with it, like will there be adequate water level for the skimmer in the 20L and room for back flow, since a 20 is only 12" tall.
I thought a 20 would work better so if I had to pull the skimmer out there'd be room to clear the rim of the tank., otherwise I'd get a 2nd 29g tank.

    The dimensions of the 113 are 49L X 22w x24t.

It will be ok if you have a ATO, I would want a bigger sump if you didn't have one.

actually the fuge does that and it's the 29 gal tank....the 20 long is for the sump only...aka the skimmer and return from the skimmer and fuge.

How exactly does the size of the sump help remove nitrates?

how are you going to have them plumbed together? sounds complicated to me, but if you can figure out how it is going to flow I say go for it. It's bigger then your first sump, but I agree I would want to go bigger if I could. What % of you DT will you have in the sump?

In the back of the 29 (which is the side now)I will drill a hole and add a bulkhead and plumbing to go to the return section of the 20 simple enough I think. The other Idea is to build my own sump with a 30 x 24 footprint (w/ a 15" height) so I can have space for a 5 gal bucket with a lid as my ATO reservoir.

The idea is that it's cheaper and easier to buy 2 pre-made aquariums...especially since Petsmart has the $1 a gal sale.....may just go with 2 29's
