    Hi everyone,

I have a HOB overflow rated for 300GPH going into the sump and i bought mag 3 as the return pump rated for 350GPH coming out of the sump, it's about a 3ft-4ft distance back to the tank. I was wondering, is the mag 3 powerful enough to send back all that water...and if not, would i be able to tweak the amount of water going into the sump from the overflow with a ball-valve? Is the water going to back up from the sump into the tank? Did i get the wrong return pump?

    Hello,

When I purchased my Mag 9.5, in the documentation with the pump was a chart indicating what the pump flow rate was with differing discharge heights.... Allowing for the head loss of my UV filter, the height of the water level in the tank above the pump, it is about 600 gph...

But as for your HOB overflow, flow limit of 350 gph, the level in the tank will be that which is necessary to provide out of the tank equal to the rate at which your putting water back into the tank.... So if your pump only gets 275 gph back to the tank then only 275 will flow down to the sump....

I think that you should be fine, sounds about right. You should always install a ball valve on your return line. Its an added protection and a way of controling the flow, if needed. Luna

Also add a ballvalve on the drain, as this lets you close off the entire sump flow in case you need to do a repair on/in the sump.
