I was looking at different external pumps for a sump return...

I am planning to have a 50 gal reef with a 20-30gal DIY sump.

I stumbled upon the Blueline HD series pumps (or Pan World).
I believe the 20HD goes about 480gph, the 30HD goes about 590gph and the 40HD goes about 790gph.

    - Does anyone have any experience with these pumps?
    - What size would you recommend?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to 3reef!
I have not used that brand of pump But I would say more flow the better.

Blueline's are OK. Not great. PanWorld is supposed to be an Iwaki knock off.

Reef tank recommended water turnover is around 10 times the total water volume per hour, This total amount does not have to all go threw your sump, Part of the turnover can be accompanied by power-heads within the display tank it's self. I would go with the 480gph pump and add some power-heads within the tank, Say 2 to 3 maxi-jet 1200's. Just remember that whatever pump you choose your overflow has to at least match what your return pump flow-rate will be at the head your will be pumping at.

As for the Blue Line pumps, I have never used them and I have also herd the same as Blade_Runner about Pan-World pumps ( Iwaki knock off ) I hope this helps ................... John

PanWorld is run by the former chief desiger for Iwaki. They run quieter cooler and actully come with a power cord. I would consider them to be better than Iwaki.

The pump that has the 480gph is rated @0 head.

-So that means that the gph would be less then that coming out of the bulkheads... right?
-Would you happen to know how much about 6 ft. of head would affect it? (Maybe for someone who has an Iwaki)
-I was also looking to use a closed loop system with a SQWD.
-Any suggestions on pumps for this?

Here is a chart for the flow rate for the HD pumps.

Looks like the HD-20 has a flow of 330 gph @ 6 feet of head
and the HD- 30 has a flow rate of about 465 GPH @ 6 feet ............................. John

    Thanks for the chart!

How would putting a tee on the return line (to get two lines) effect the gph?

I would go with a Y instead of a T It will effect it some but much less than a T would........... John

    That makes sense.

-Would you still go with the 20HD in this case, and use a closed loop system to make up the rest of the water movement? I like the idea of no powerheads.
I would like to put a SQWD in the closed loop.

That would make 4 bulkheads in all (2 from sump return+ 2 closed loop).
    -Does that sound sufficient?
