I really don't have a great way of explaining this in words. I am designing a sump and was originally planning on putting a bubble column in where the overflow is pouring into the sump but I am now thinking about drilling the sump and having the overflow pour out of a bulkhead and into the filter sock tray. I was wondering if anybody had any feedback or experiences with this idea. Would it be louder or quieter than a bubble column wich will take up more precious sump space.

Here is a terrible drawing trying to illustrate my idea.

A filter sock would make it much quieter but the drawback is having to change it out every 3 or so days to avoid a nitrate problem.

Most of the noise comes from the overflow if the drain inlet is not set up correctly. You rarely hear anything from the outlet, especially if the sump is inside the cabinet behind closed doors.

I'm having the same problem and can't describe it on my thread on here either. I don't have a filter sock, but I have a "basket" with filter media that my drain outlet pours into. I have it suspended about 2" above the water line in my sump. I can barely hear anything below in the sump. Like you said most of my noise is up in the overflow. FRUSTRATING. I'm about to offer Todd_Sails a weekend vacation to FL to come look at my sump!!

Thank you for the replies, I should have mentioned the ball valve on the overflow wich will equal zero noise up in the overflow. I'm just worried about water splashing noises in the sump if the water essentially pours out of the sump wall sideways and into the sock tray.

There is no benefit to doing the bulkhead in the way you have drawn; and yes it will splash much more. Just run it straight down into the sock.

I used a piece of 1" heavy wall vinyl tubing on the end of my overflow into the sump that is bent into a long gradual 90 degree sweep so that it lays on the bottom of the sump with no splashing or filter socks to clean. The change of direction is gradual so no restrictions and hardly any bubbles at all. It enters the same chamber as my skimmerright next to the intake so the skimmer picks it right up and processes it immediately.

Thank for the feedback, I'm just trying to find some way that doesn't take too much room but has nothing in the sock to make it easier to swap socks.
