In the pic below, I'm trying to illustrate the plumbing work of this setup. Two drains and two returns. One drain to the skimmer. The other drain to the refugium with a Ball valve that restricts the flow back to the skimmer section. Problem is, shouldn't I have that drain by itself into the skimmer rather than teeing it with the other drain? My reasoning is if the drain pipe has reached its maximum capability and by sending more water from the ball valve on the other drain, wouldn't the first drain pipe start to rise and back up because its already reached its maximum draining capability and more water is being sent to that pipe?

Sounds confusing I know, but I'm in the middle of doing my plumbing and that concern came to my head :)

It looks like you have it planned correctly. Not sure I am following your question, but your schematic looks correct.

NasaGeek is correct, if your gonna run seperate drains your drawing looks correct.
I have duel drains and basically tie them together into a single 1 1/2" line and then drain it as shown in the below diagram.

If I understand your question correctly you were thinking of teeing the two drains together.

Don't do that, tee off from the refugium side and have that water enter the skimmer side from it's own pipe. You will have two pipes emptying in to the skimmer side. The diagram is the way you want to go.

I think you might be asking if your sump might receive too much water on the skimmer side because there is too much water coming from your display tank, if that is your question you shouldn't have to worry about it, because your return line with a ball valve regulates the flow. You will never drain more water from your tank than your return pump puts back into it. If you are concerned about the capability of your pipe itself 1" PVC can flow more than 900 gph, so unless your return pump, and overflow are rated over this, you don't have to worry about the drain itself.

no, that wasnt my issue . my concern was if the first drain is working at its peak , and i teed my second drain with my first drain with a ball valve, then im adding more water to the first drain. The first drain is already at its peak so now it will be backed up. Right or wrong ?

    Your reasoning is correct.
