I have had my sunpolyp for over 3 weeks now. He will not open up so I can't feed him. Idk how he is still alive I have tryed pytoplanton the only thing that happens is the hole in the center of the polyp gets larger then it closes after a few hours. How can I get him to open up

Are you trying to feed it during the day or night? They generally only open during the night to feed.

Yea Newreef...check your polyp late at night or in the middle of the night and I bet it will be open.

Sun Polyps grow in the dark under hangs of rock's and unlike there name they tend to feed at night or well when your lights are out... Try and target feed at the same time every day or other day and they will get used to that feeding cycle and will open on there own ..

    Best of luck...

I also found it helpful to feed the tank first. They sense the food and after about 20 minutes my sun corals start opening and then I can target feed them.

Ditch the phyto, they need more meaty foods. I use a combo of mysis, brine, and cyclops a few times a week, and sometimes finely chopped up supermarket shrimp. When mine dont want to open up, I thaw some food and squirt the juice right on them . . . come back in 10 - 15 minutes and they should be open looking for whatever made that sweet smell.

Here is a surefire way to do it. Take the sun polyp frag and put it in a small, new tupperwear container (never exposed to soap/detergent), containing aquarium water. Do not expose it to air, just put the tupperwear in the aquarium to fill with water, and put the frag in it, and then take the whole thing out of the tank. Then put some frozen mysis into that container, and stir it up. Put the container in a dim/dark room, and leave it alone for about 30 minutes or so, stirring occasionally. The polyps should come out, and it should eat. You wouldn't do this in the regular tank, as all the mysis would contaminate the water. But once the coral has eaten, you can discard the dirty water and put the frag back in your tank.

You can trigger a feed response by feeding the tank. They eat Zooplancton and even brine shrimp. Try getting a pop bottle and cutting the bottom off. Place it over the coral and add Brine shrimp to the bottle. This will allow all the Brine to stay with the Coral and trigger the feeding response. If you do this daily you can train the coral to feed when ever it best suits you
