Ok, I've had a FW tank (30 gal/emperor 400/UGF) for years, I recently came into a 37 gallon arch front tank and I've always wanted a salt/reef tank.

The tank I 'came into' also came with an emperor 400 that had been used in a FW setup. The obvious quesiton all us rookies has - what else do I need to get started?

    1) Is the Emperor 400 enough of a MCB filter system or do I need something else? If so, what?

    2) The tank had a plain old florescent bulb and hood, should that whole thing be replaced?

Anything anyone can do to help would be so appreciated!

    TIA,
    Mike

Forget the Emperor 400, get yourself a sump and protein skimmer. You will need new lighting...First decide what types of corals you would like to keep...That will be the deciding factor as far as lighting goes...Do your homework and asks lots of questions...

Salutations! Glad to see you found way here!

Great you are finding way to SW.

Get some salt mix and Live Rock...start cycling. Then spend a whole bunch of time reading up on filtering and lighting requirements while you wait. Good protein skimmer a must. Lots of lighting choices...

    Good Luck...Keep us posted.

Thanks for the starter tips, I'm out google'ing sumps already... Are those all things I can use without tank modifications? I've heard horror stories about lfs wanting to charge you for drilling and piping, etc.

If the tank is not drilled you can get an external overflow....I have learned over the years, too many to count, that you cannot always trust the LFS...DO plenty of research...8)

There are plenty out there, many of them are not worth the money...This is where you do not want to skimp because you will wind up getting another. Trust me, I went through this early on...I am now running a Tunze 9010 in our 72 bowed...There are some great products to choose from...Again, research....

Oh yeah, and my tank is tempered glass so drilling is out of the question anyway, right?
