Surface scum??

    what type of powerheads do you use? In my 55 gallon frag tank i have 2 k1s and 2k2s point at the surface and have no problems but if i remove any one of the four i have a problem

    If you have it wil alot of water movment on the top you might also be underpowered in your skimmer. I like the HoB skimmers with the surface skimmer built in like the Reef Oct..

    Hi Colcol

    great advise thus far on this thread
    this white film like scum on the surface of the water are protiens , they are bonded to the water surface its the same principle (surface tension) that would bond those same protiens to the bubbles in your skimmer

    the skimmer cant get at them whilst they are bonded to the surface
    so get the water surface aggitated more, put them back into the water column and your skimmer can get at them

    My tank is not equipped to surface skim, so i use newspaper to skim the scum off

    I just got rid of my issue with surface scum. I put and oscillating powerhead in (for now) that gives the water a wave effect. It works really well. I still need to add more powerheads though.
