I have a 75gal reef tank that has been up for 20yrs with minimal maintenance. It has finally caught up with me and I now have "old tank syndrome".I have crazy hair algae and cant stop it. I have tried everything.I have given up trying to get rid of it and have a new 110gal seemless glass bowfront that I am starting from scratch.out with the old and in with the new.The only things I want to trasfer over to the new tank are softies that I can cut off, my fish and my anemone. As i do not want to transfer any hair algae to the new tank.I have a few frags of hard coral and a large cup coral that I would like to keep( i think my green bubble is a lost cause. base is full of hair up to the membrane) but am worried that at the base of these may have some spores or tiny pieces still embedded or hidding. I assume I dont have to worry about the membrane part. I plan on scrubbing the base well and may hurt some of the coral but sure it will recover. Does algaefix treat algae by killing algae or by working on nitrates and phosphates? If it acually attacks the algae will dipping the coral in it kill any remaining pieces? any ideas or recomendations will be greatly appreciated.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Algaefix is an algaecide, there for it's mechanism is not depletetion of phosphates and nutritents to kill algae.

I would not dip a coral in it. Have you considered a complete black out to assist in decreasing the GHA before you make the transfere and then as much manual removal as possible.

I would be interested in seeing a tank that has been up and running for 20years.

    Good luck

    :)

I won't assume anything but have you tried GAC/GFO reactors, Bio Pellets, vodka dosing,... etc to get rid of the algae. GHA usually needs quite abit of nitrate and phosphate to thrive. I'm sure over time these can build up in the sandbed and crevices plus the gha are detritus traps in and of itself but it can be overcome. ;)

Thanks! That is what I will have to do. If you click on link in my signature or go to my photo album you can see the old beast at the start of its downfall.

Not tried all of those but am ready to switch and start fresh. I was told that I would poss. need to replace rock and sand bed etc. plus system is running an out of date skimmer and a wet/dry system. Was good back then....many years of crap under there.
    Thanks
