Switching to Freshwater

Hello all...just a quick question....I originally set up a very small 6g QT tank, but have since upgraded to a larger one. I'm going to use the 6 gallon as a freshwater tank for fancy goldfish or something like that. My question is....the 6g is an eclipse tank with a bio-wheel filter. When setting up the QT tank I placed a small amount of sand and small piece of live rock in it..and it ran for about 3 days total with saltwater.....I have since broke it down and rinsed everything out....

would I be able to just set it up with fresh water and not worry about replacing the bio wheel filter, since it only ran for a few days? (Obviously not using the LR or and in the FW that was placed in for the SW setup.) Or would I need to actually purchase another bio-wheel filter for a freshwater set-up?

*Edit* 6g is too small for a fancy goldfish huh, I just thought about that....does anyone know the minimum tank size (online showing anywhere from 20g-45g, just seems a little big)

 

I personally would stay away from gold fish. They will polute the tank very quickly, unless you feed very sparingly. In regards to the filter media and wheel, maybe a good rinse will be ok IMO.

 

Yea, I soaked it in FW and rinsed it in hot water.....I know your point about the goldfish...they are quite messy, and produce a lot of ammonia correct....I was never really fond of them until yesterday when I actually checked some out at the LFS the other day....but I also liked the guppies too...man they are pretty neat, create a lot of movement...anywho...this is a "reef" forum..so let me stop.

just so ya know there is a fresh water section but the bio wheel shuld be ok the fresh water bacteria will kill off the saltwater bacteria and vice versa shuld be fine

 

guppies are great get a male and and about 4 females and in no time you will have about 50 fish in the tank.LoL i know i have a 10gl guppie tank.
