FWIW, Ive seen pics of a guys 20H who kept a dersa at the very bottom of his tank, under 4 x 24 watt T5s, for well over a year.

4x24 over a 20h? Oh, no doubt he could keep a deresa... Croceas I'm sure as well. I just don't know why so many people put ALL clams on the sand bed?? Croceas and maximas are rock dwellers....

    Oh well back to T5s!
    Happy lighting!

Thanks Dr . with 6 x 80 watts over my 5 ft - nobody in my house suffers from seasonal affected disorder - I cant get close enough to the tank some evenings as there is a row of dinning chairs full of people staring into it

getting some serious growth from the easy GSPs - cant move any of the 3 colonies, less than 2 months after purchase as if I try Ill leave portions of GSP on adjacent rocks

I never thought I would be in the position of calling these so called easy corals, weeds, but thats because I only had T8s on previous set ups
with these T5s , I know, I could have some serious problems with these corals over running my reef

I have a few large patches of GSP that I NEED to get out... they are encroaching on some SPS that I DON'T want to get damaged....
I have seen more and more business' even using T5 to light shops and that thing, more energy effiecient and cheaper in the long run, not just for reefing!

Ok, back on track now! :)

Shops could use T5s b/c they cost less to run, and they generally don't keep their corals and clams long enough for them to bleach out, fade, or discolor. Plus corals in a LFS are typically under T5s in a wide 12-14" shallow frag tank anyway, not in a 24-29" deep tank like some us have. ;)

I meant shops as in other commercial business' not just LFS.... I have even seen the local Subway has T5s above the counter... It made me want to eat fresh!

My tank is 24" deep and have no issue with T5.. If I went deeper I would most likely overdrive but then again, at 24" I am still at 270uMol/m2/sec which even if I was at 80 I would just keep LPS and things like that down there.

But as far as the LFS and T5, yeah thats a true statement

hey dr. if you find a easy cure to them gsps, let me know. i have the same problem. dumbest idea i ever had was to buy gsps.

    but i do have a few ?.

    how do you light acclimate?

what acros do you find to take longer to acclimate?

what would be the difference in appearance of a acro suffering from light shock(photo inhibition) to a acro suffering from not enough light.?

most of my frags are ora(i have many doing very very well), and some that seem to some what slowly decline, they start by lightening the body color, as the polyps slowly brown and retract. while still producing decent growth rates. over course of 2 month period. bleaching is sure to follow.

exp. i have a sunset milliapora, suffering from what i think to be photo inhibition.

and 8 inches away is a rose milli that is just amazing looking with absolutely great color and polyp extension. super fast growth. so i think i can rule out water quality.

they started both next to each other, the sunset started to fade so i moved it up only for it to fade faster.

so far the only coral i was able to get to the top of my rock work (about 7") below water surface) is a oregon blue tort. and a marshall island blue bottle brush(my love).

and a unknown acro that has been growing at the top for almost 2yrs starting from a small translucent polyp, with no skeleton just like 1 small polyp i dont think it was a fragment, cause i did some research on pocciliapora lavae growth and it was pretty similar. the rock was from florida and i think it was taken strait from the sea uncured. now that it is finally a decent size coral i will be trying to identify it soon. anyways it seem to be well acclimated to the lighting at the top.

i think i rambled a lot cause i have been with out internet for a few wks, so i got all this built up stuff i need to discuss. sorry. pick out what u can from it.lol
