    hello everyone.

Ever since i got my tank (about 6 - 7 months ago) i didnt put a background on it. and recently i got tired of seeing all the wires and my skimmer (hang on back) and whatever else that was dangling back there so i decided to put a background on the back of the tank. My question is that the background i put on is black, is that ok?. its actually the back side of a background "poster" that you buy at any LFS. some have images on both side but i had one that had an image on one side and the back was black. I love the way it looks... it adds some depth to the tank being only 14" wide. So let me know if im making a mistake buy having a black background.

    Thanks

    Marc.

Heck no :) As far as I'm concerned that's all personal preference. I was gonna go for a deep purple almost black color myself :)

i'd also go for black or deep blue. for a new tank it is easier spray painted before setting up.

I use a black background and always have.  I always paint mine on because salt creep gets in between the tank and the back ground and looks like crap, so you will need to be able to wipe it down.

I am a little confused on how it would matter if the black back ground absorbs light?  Are you looking for reflection to grow corals behind the rock work?

no not at all... i was just wondering thats all.... just in case there was a "reef tank rule" about black backgrounds. since black absorbs light. just my paranoid imagination i guess.

lol...no you will be fine. You can even use a blue back ground if you wish but black hides powerheads and overflow boxes better.

Do you need a special kind of paint?

Yep, I agree. Once coralline starts growing on the back, the black will definitely look better.
