Hi guys jus a lil help wit the s.g.

Iv gotten a bit confused about the whole relationship of temperature and s.g.

Iv got two nano tanks, one has been cycling for a week now wit parameters:

    pH: 8.4
    Temp: 76 F
    s.g.: 1.022

**I havn't tested other things like ALK n Nit yet since i would be doing water changes regularly anyways and would let the tank cycle n age a bit.

The other nano i been having for couple of months now, and im planning to get a cleaner shrimp and two clown, parameters are..

    pH: 8.1
    Temp: 81 F
    s.g.: 1.023
    Nit: 0 - 0.05 //more like 0.025 p.p.m
Alk: 2.8 Milli Equivalents per liter

I'm planning to buy the cleaner shrimp and the two clowns today for my older tank. But i will be moving the shrimp to the new nano in about 3 weeks... Are inverts cool wit this much salt in their water? or is too low?
**Btw seahorses will be joining the shrimp in the new nano.. if all goes well ;D

As long as you acclimate them slowly to the water, the 1.022-1.023 should be fine for fish and shrimp. The only reason most have 1.025-1.026 is for more trace elements in the salt mix to support their corals.

params look fine, but sea horses are much more sensitive than most livestock

As for the relationship with temp vs sg, I believe there is some form of ratio with it, but the higher the temp, the lower the actual sg will be than the hydrometer is reading. If you get a good refractometer, they figure this in for you.
And trace elements are not the only reason to have a higher sg. If you ever get to go snorkeling or scuba diving at a reef, bring your refractometer. The average global SG for tropical reefs is about 1.027 - 1.029. A lot of us (myself included) keep a higher SG to mimic natural reefs. I keep mine at ~1.028. Some keep theres even higher than that.

The swing arm hydrometers are calibrated at 60 degrees. For every 10 degree increase, you must subtract 0.001 from the reading. So a reading of 1.028 at 80 degrees is actually 1.026. With the float type of hydrometer, the reading is independent of the temperature, as is the refractometer.

Really. I did not know that. Thank you. K+. Would there be any disadvantages to keeping SG at 28 to 29?

I hear that the inverts like the salinity high, like if you do a fresh water dip on a fish with parasites they die off, or if you have a FO tank you keep the salinity low so the fish are less likely to catch anything...just what i heard:cheesy:

+1 on the inverts. I noticed mine where much happier when I increased my SG, specially the cleaner shrimp
