Question. My Coralline Algae is turning white in some areas in the tank. Other spots are growing in beautiful purple color. The corals seem to be exploding, growing like crazy these past few days. What is the cause of the coralline turning white? I am also getting a ton of little white shell like things on the back of the glass. Spiral in shape. The are hard and don't move. You can scrape them off. What are they?

I had my purple coraline algae turn white when I moved houses. The rock was in buckets at he time with no heater. I think the coraline is now dead(white). But it could be from a multitude of things. From what I noticed it could be...

    -low temperature
    -drastic change in temperature
    -no light
    -maybe low O2 level??

The spiral things are either amphipods. I have them on my rocks...

My temperature stays at 79 all day and all night. Plenty of 02. I did change light to Leds recently. Now that I think about it, the coralline has changed from that time. No not amphipods. I know what they are. These don't move. The shell is like a spiral. Little White specks on the glass.

    Can coraline get light-shock?

hmm...I am not sure on the spiral things, but I have the same thing...I remember now that amphipods move. These things(you and I both have) don't move at all.

It's pretty much a given that coralline will die off if you change lighting. It is super sensitive to spectrum and intensity. It should come back fast though.

I have no clue. I doubt it. I'll see if I can get a picture of them.

Any idea on what they are? Just looked over and saw one hermit is covered by them.
