Yea I am anxious to see his response as well. I was originally going with a Mag 9.5 or a silence 1073.040.

i went with a mag 9.5 and it is turned down by probably half because the overflow can't hand the GPH. i would go with a 7 if i could do it over again. It is also true about the off center overflow. It does get in the way for scaping and flow...

Lol. But I'd rather have his experience talk to us rather than us learn through failure.

I was looking at return pumps in the range of about 800-1000 gph with 4' head, but after his responses, I'm now looking at something between 400-500. Lighter on the wallet too. ;D

I totally understand. John has got mad skills and knowledge. I just wanted to make sure nobody was confused.:)

And yes, it's a great idea to not have a rushing river in your sump...

Thanks Dowtish, I run a Rio 8HF. My sump holds 30 gallons and the pump produces 270gph at 4ft head.

Actually the sump is a 40 breeder. 30 gallons is the calculated holding volume as set up.

Thanks John. I think I'm going to go with a Tunze Silence 1073.020 and turn it down just because of how little power it draws and the price.
