Q and A with Dr. Jim Spotila, Drexel University, founder of the Leatherback Trust

Why are you doing this promotion?

We’re doing this “race” to raise awareness and invite donations to protect leatherback turtles on Playa Grande beach and in the water. These amazing animals have been around 100 million years, but may have only 10 years left. There are probably only 4,000 leatherback turtles left in the entire Pacific Ocean. There used to be tens of thousands. As we say in the race theme, “They are going faster than you think.” W

    How Can I Help?

» Register to support a turtle. It’s FREE! You’ll receive daily updates on your turtle’s progress and messages from researchers about leatherbacks and other endangered marine and land species.

» Encourage other turtle supporters! Forward this site to family, friends, and co-workers.

» Donate! Donations will be used by the Leatherback Trust to protect turtles on their nesting beaches and along their migration route. We need $5 million to purchase the land around the park, patrol the beaches, feed and house volunteers, and provide marine patrols during nesting season.

» Sell on eBay to Help Leatherback Turtles!
Help the Leatherback Trust continue their mission of saving leatherback turtles by selling on eBay and donating the proceeds to the Leatherback Trust. Start Today!

TOPP - Tagging of Pacific Predators

TOPP (Tagging of Pacific Predators) seeks to better understand the North Pacific ecosystem by observing the biology and behavior of top-level marine predators in their oceanographic habitat. TOPP offers an organism's view of the open ocean environment, vastly increasing our knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and gathering data that will help policymakers and resource managers make wise decisions about ocean use.

    The Leatherback Trust

The Leatherback Trust (TLT) is a non-profit foundation to save the leatherback turtle and other sea turtles from extinction. TLT scientists were instrumental in founding Las Baulas National Marine Park in Costa Rica, a protective haven for the most important leatherback nesting beaches in the Pacific Ocean.

Very cool, we have the loggerheads down here in Florida. Seen them breed like a million times. We go sometimes to see them hatch to scare off the birds. I wish they would protect them when they hatch, hundreds of them die in the first 10 minutes of their life. I know it is nature, but they need our help to bounce back from the harm we have caused them. Awesome creatures, thanks for sharing this with us.
