    I thought a ref was part of the sump. LFS has a ref in the sump of one of their tanks with plastic shavings in it to collect bacteria and what not.

    Looks to me like you could tidy up the equipment to one side of sump. Put in a couple of simple dividers (or fancy ones) and seclude your return pump at the opposite end of your equipment. With your fuge area in the middle.
    Take a look at this diagram.

    The difference between simple and fancy would be: The set of 3 dividers on the left hand side. You could go with just one. It helps reduce bubbles though.

    Is that a 20 long?
