I've been searching posts about light timers for awhile now, and have got no where really. I have two 250w metal halides and I am worried if I get the wrong timer from the store it might fail or worse catch on fire. What should I look for when buying one.. a heavy duty grounded timer? I see some that say like "15 amp" or "120 volt" but have no clue what's good enough for what I need.

Whats worked best for you guys

Heres one of my ballasts if that helps at all

I got one with my Current MH set up that I do not use as I have an Aqua Controller. Now my MH are 150W but I just grabbed it and the back of it says. 115v 15A 1725W. Do you need one or two?

I just use the normal timers from Lowes.
Magnetic Ballasts, 175w halides x2. Have them plugged into a surge protector and the protector plugged into the timer.

I had my 250w MH plugged into the power strip timer before I got my controller and never had any issues. A surge protector is a good idea though just incase anything happens it will trip.

I use the heavy duty indoor/outdoor timers from lowes. I figure they I/O ones should be more tolerant of moisture. I used the digital timer on my controller until it got stuck on. Now back to good old reliable mechanical timers...

You want something that is grounded, heavy duty and 15amp.

    Preferably UL listed.

That is what I use and then I plug them into a GFCI 6 outlet power strip.
