I added some snails to my new tank last night and then an inhabitant popped out of my LR and appears to be a gorilla crab; it appears the new activity got em curious as I didn't know he was living there...anyway, my friend suggests putting the LR in a bucket of water with something like 1030 SG and he should bail out of the rock. The rock is pretty healthy and has alot of life on it, my concern is, what will be the affect on the corraline and other life? Has anyone had experience with this? please share your ideas.

    Thanks

Coralline is amazingly resilient, even if it bleaches it will be back within a few weeks. Take the rock out and wait for the crab to come out, flick him off (I have done this in the past and it took about 5 minutes).

If there are no corals on the rock and its only coralline – no hesitation, pull it and do what you have to. You said “a lot of life” not sure what that translates into -- if its a big concern buy a crab trap they do work.

You could always try a bottle (or small soda can with the top cut off), fill with water add food and sink upright near the crabs rock. In the morning he will be trapped inside the bottle.

I meant for actual crabbing. Chesapeake, MD blue crab. You can use pots or line with bait and a net.....

well this thread got funny....but back to your crab - try the jar, just place it near a rock where the crab can climb into it after the food. Let us know the outcome please.

place a small glass deep bowl in the sand so the top is almost flush with the sand, put a weighted piece of shrimp or other bait in the bottom of the bowl. do this towards the end of the day. the crab will go into the cup and not be able to get out.

Thank you all for your replies, I went a head and tried the small glass jar; I set it close to the rock where I saw the crab and believe he is living, but placed the jar on the opposite side of the rock as there was no room on the side where I saw him. I used a piece of shrimp that I had in my freezer. It was pre cooked shrimp, I had a few amphiopods on it in the morning but that is it. I will try again with a piece of raw shrimp tonight. If he does not come out, I will dip the rock in a bath of acid...lol
