Hi everyone, this Toadstool seems to be having a rough time. No polyps for days-week at a time. I know with all soft coral a lot of toxins are present. Over the last say 4 months though it has these white spots forming. First a couple but now as you can see, there are more. I know the first thought is Necrosis, but, is it or just from aging, it is probably 2 1/2 yrs old (in my tank). What do you think.

Hey Jed, I had the same thing happen to me not long ago, unfortunately, the stool went down hill from there. Mine also started to "decompose" from the bottom up. Good luck with it.

    Hi UncleJed

these are just some thoughts from me
having studied the picture I note that all the yellow polyps tentacles? are pointing straight outwards ( so either you turned off water movement to take the picture or they are in an area of very low flow)

as the toadstool is directly in front of them , Im thinking maybe the toady is also in an area of limited flow - which IME would account for the polyps remaining retracted for days on end

when this coral sloughs its skin - does it happen quickly or does it also take a few days for the full shed to come off , do you have to help it at times with a blast from a baster or a waft of the hand?
again this would indicate flow is not enough where it is located

I have seen this myself / bald spots , even on much younger/ smaller toadies , I noticed once that bald spots often occured on any area that got sand or other waste material deposited on them - again if the flow is not adequate things will settle on them
they do provide a large basin type structure and if you have any gobies or wrasse species small particles can get blown upwards and then settle on the coral.

apologies if I am way of track with any of my thoughts/ comments above

    Steve

Thanks Luna and Steve, yes it is in an area of low flow. I had the #3 Koralia in the back blowing water at the front in that corner and changed that due to the Torch and Goniapora (the way it is now favors the flow they like). Problem is, the Toadstool was just attached to a piece (branch) of Tonga but after it was placed in that corner it has now attached to base rock I can't move, hmmm, maybe I'll try to add a Nano Koralia over there.

I have noticed the same spots on mine and then a few weeks later the spots were gone, so if they done go away in a few weeks then I would start to ask more Q's about it....

Thanks Danny, I increased the flow to it and will see if it helps.
