Today at the LFS there was a sale and I scored a Mag 9.5 for $50 brand new. Now this is going to be for my current project which is 30g reef with 15 gal sump/refug. Is this pump going to have too much flow for such a system running a 3 foot head?

The Mag 9.5 pond pump is rated at 950 gallons per hour (Googled it)

for a reef set up , many people aim for 50 x the tank volume of water movement
so for your tank thats 30 x 50 = 1500 gallons per hour of water movement

so based on that, it would seem to me that its not to much pump but it may be to much movement from a single pump if it where all entering the tank from 1 direction

if you have multiple outlets in your system so you can divide this flow over several locations then I dont think you have a problem
