This post is annexed to a post I started on treating cyanobacteria and is meant to be a reminder to everyone in here that it's not enough just to simply follow directions from manufacturers but to ask and heed the advice of the people in here who have gone through similar situations, whatever they may be. Here's the post:

    http://www.3reef.com/forums/algae/treating-cyano-question-40199.html

I did everything according to the instructions on the medication which was pretty straight forward:

"Mix one level spoonful for every 15 gallons of aquarium water with a small amount of water from the aquarium to be treated. Pour dissolved solution into the aquarium. Repeat after 48 hours if necessary. Wait at least one week before additional treatments."

"Note: May affect pH and oxygen levels."

Even the LFS told me that they use this product for their own tanks, it's completely safe for all inhabitants. It may affect pH but this should take care of itself after a day or two.

Saturday morning I mixed my solution, putting 7 spoonfulls for my 120 gallon tank (1 spoonful for every 15 gallons) and poured it in the tank. Shut the skimmer down for the day, left my filter run with no media for added flow.

Sunday morning everything was dead (trigger, tang, puffer, hawkfish, chromis, wrasse). The only survivor was my coral beauty, and my shrimps.

So now I'm starting from square one. The tank has been stripped, everything in it has been thrown out with the exception of the live rock which is now dead. I'm going to keep a couple of pieces, boil them and use some of the rock for decorative purpose on my next setup.

This has really bummed me out. My kids as well. ......but I'm not defeated. I will learn from this and go forward.

    Life can really suck sometimes!

What did you use to clean the cyano up with the chem clean product ? I have used that myself on a few tanks of mine and one many of others and have never had an issue with its use, If that is the product you used I'd have to guess you had other problems along with it. mn but does suck I had the same thing hapen yrs and yrs ago when I used some freezedried bacteria to fast cycle a tank all was fine for about 3 months and oneday I came home and poof all where belly up.

That's a bummer. When I treat I follow my own rule - use 1/2 of the suggested dosage. It may take a bit longer to get things back to normal but you're not shocking the system.

    That is terrable.
    Sorry to hear about this.
Are you going to do anything different this time around when setting it up that may cut down on the cyano?

Man that really sucks... karma. I have used chemi clean with out any problems before... Im glad to hear that you will keep going in this wonderful hell of a hoby though. Look at it this way, now you get to start from scratch again but with everything you learned so it might be easier... Good luck bud

Wow, I just got done treating my home system with chemiclean with no major problems. I started at 1/2 dose for 24 hours and increased to the full dose after seeing no ill effects. I let the system cycle for another 48, then did the water change and started skimming again.

    Sorry for your loss.

What's done is done. This has been a major learning experience for myself (a bit painful mind you).

I may be down but I'm not out! I'm going forward with my future setup. I'm planning on having my tank "Spic & Span" by this weekend.

    Thanks everyone.
