this is my same issue with the sand. im moving my 20 high livestock/rock/sand to a new 40 acrylic with baserock/sand and water already filled. yet im worried like brian about placing the live sand in the new tank. if we were to do that, wouldnt it leach nitrates and stuff under the sand that has been trapped? my real worry is that i have tons of snails (got a great CuC from reefcleaners) and how am i going to get all of them into the new tank without putting all my old live sand in?

... not trying to steal the thread but it relates. :)

Actually I will be using new live sand. I planned on tossing my old sand unless I need some to seed. However some will be placed in when I catch my CUC and add to new tank

You should have no problems moving all but the sand. I would go with new dry sand the "live" stuff doesn't have enough bacteria in it to be worth the additional cost.

Thats what I did with my new setup. My tanks are maybe 5 feet away. I just used the live rock from that tank plus the live rock I was curing for 5 plus months and put new sand and water in. So far all my levels have been at zero. My calcium was off the charts and thats only because I had nothing really in the tank to absorb it.

easiest way to get the cuc out of the sand:

I bought a large-holed collander, for like spaghetti or washing off fruit, from the dollar store. the platic ones with larger holes, not the metal one.

Start scooping up sand and get to shaking! Easier (and safer, depending on whats hanging out in your sand...) than roaming your hands around the sandbed for hours :)
