My fiance and I are sending his mom and a friend to Puerto Vallarta for her 50th birthday (Maybe she'll decide to stay! ;) ). This is not cheap and we want to purchase travel insurance in case anything happens. Also, in case any medical issues arise while they are down there.

Has anyone bought travel insurance before, and from what company? Or do you know of any good companies?

    Thanks!

Tuned in to this one. I have no earthly idea if travel insurance is even worth the cost. I tend to be a bit on the untrusting side. I just read an article addressing rental car insurance. I've always declined, knowing full well that my ins. co. will handle anything--it was pretty discouraging to read that your insurance doesn't cover basic things like the time the rental car is out of fleet, and that comes right off your benefits. In other words, after all is said and done, is the $17 dollars per day going to buy you anything other than red tape heartache?

I'm curious to know about people's experience with travel insurance. When it gets international, our United States laws are sometimes "backseat" to "theirs."

    Let's hear some input. . . .

Well I am only doing it because it's Mexico. Nothing against Mexico, but if medical issues should arise we want her back in the US. An example is my grandpa who had a stroke while in Mexico and had travel insurance so he was airlifted back to the US for treatment. Otherwise he would have had to stay in a hospital down there.

I found a package that's $36/person (and it's American Express, so I figure it will be ok). So I think the 72 might be worth the peace of mind!

But I am curious if anyone else has any input and knows of any companies.

its probably different up here , but my daughter went to paris for 20 days. shes 15 , the travel insurance for her was 70. id be afraid to see what it would cost for an "experienced " person like myself. :) thought kinda expensive but best to have it for her.

Well, the Am Ex company I found has packages. So the standard package is 36 dollars per person. Then there are three other packages that are more expensive based on the cost of the trip and the traveler's age. But I thought standard would be ok.

When we went to Los Vegas we used Travel Gaurd/ AIG. Here in town. It uses Am Ex ... as well.

KC, I would check what the insurance covers. in my experience, it pretty much only covers if the traveler gets sick and can't go. It does not cover weather or any other "acts of God".

    Thanks for the opinions!

    The standard package covers:

    Emergency medical/dental $20,000
    Emergency Medical evacuation $20,000
Baggage loss and baggage delay $400
    Airflight insurance $50,000
Trip cancellation $1000 (wouldn't cover resort cost, but the resort has a lenient cancellation policy)

    Sounds like enough, eh?

The medical alone is probably worth it. What is the airflight insurance? Just be aware weather or any issue (protests in Greece) out of their control is probably not covered. My last trip to Europe was effected by the volcanic ash and that was not covered. i stopped getting the insurance a long time ago since i am unlikely to cancel for any reason other than reasons that are not covered. However, i always wonder if i am not making a mistake by not getting the medical insurance. Especially if your future in-law is getting up there in years.
