Do you think that the Tsunami has damaged the reefs in that area in the indian ocean?

Do you think it will hurt the marine import/export side of the industry?

Uh, calm dowm Bob, he was only asking a question. It's not like he was whinning about no gold bar maroon clowns being on the market for the next 6 months I see no problem and have no problem with him being curious. It's really hard to imagine how bad things are, when your THOUSANDS of miles away, now isn't it?

In response to the reef/export question:

Majorly hit most collectors and export facilities. My Sri Lankan exporters (he's OK) facility is trashed, as is all his collectors villages (plus many collectors are no longer with us). The reefs won't have to bad of a time recoverring, it's the villagers and economy that will be the hardest hit (as far as recovery).

I think Bob 8228 may be a bit more sensitive than others, being he is in Malaysia. I am sure there are plenty of people around the world who could have cared less that we had planes fly into civilian buildings here, yet our world stood still for many many weeks and months. I am sure the same holds true for this devastation.

I don't think there is any problem with asking the question, however. After all, our hobby is an industry with many things impacting it. Weather, ethics, overcollection, methods of collection, etc.

I am interested in discussion of all types...It pains me to hear of the collectors and such - I understand that these people work very hard to put food on the table for their families. And we do not often think of that when we make our purchases.

Why is a fish $50 or $100 dollars? What went into delivering a fish to the US market? People risk their lives every day to do just that for the aquarium trade.

Thank you Gresham for the updates, and I am interested in knowing how things pan out over there. I am keeping all persons in my prayers and thoughts ;D

 

Bob sorry! I did not mean to be insensetive to the tsunami disaster there but I never knew what power it has I was just trying to get a grasp of just what a tsunami dose to the ocean floor. I see the destruction above sea level killing more than 50k people and was wondering about the damage we cant see under water thats all. I dont know you at all but god bless you and your family and hope your family and friends are ok.

 

oops, didn't mean to sound overly sensitive...my apologies. those questions are definitely fair, though i had some little problems with the timing of it.
anyway, i read somewhere (in this forum) about nature taking care of itself. new breed of corals surfacing, replenishing itself, etc.
and guys n gals, thanks for your thoughts and concerns.

 

just to add in...went to "ground zero" yesterday to visit some relatives and friends. luckily no one died or missing or even injured, though some serious damages to properties.
but what shocking sight to be seen...and we are the least impacted by it, by number of death (less than 100). upon reflection, none of us (myself included) ever realized, how lucky some of us are. the sight have caused me some "mental disturbance" and i readily admit, i would not even dare to go to the other seriously affected "ground zeroes" like phuket, sumatra, etc. may god bless all those people.
