I am sure this is a rookie question but I can't find a picture of two things I have noticed in my tank and want to make sure they do not need to be immediately irradicated.

Both are small and so the pictures aren't great but I will do my best to describe them and get a better picture later if necessary.

About a month ago I posted a picture of "scrolling" pattern on my glass. They happily turned out to be snail eggs...I am hoping the first picture is just a baby snail but I am not sure. I have seen several of them in the tank. They almost look like large soft ticks.

The second picture is of something I first noticed tonight. In the picture it is above the right side of the snail and below and to the right of the green hair algae...I am working on that too:-/ They are pointing down.

It is a very difficult to see but it is a very small "wormlike" or "tentacle" like thing coming from underneath a rock. I have seen two of them coming from under the same rock but I will look for more. It is about an inch long and it seems to be black and white striped.

Any help and instruction on what to do next would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

I think from the pictures and description given that the 2 things are

1 - seems like its either a sponge or maybe a Tunicate
2 - Brittle star fish legs - the body being in hole/crevice in the rock.

if the IDs are correct, they are good guys

    Steve,

Thank you for the quick response (this website is a life saver). Are there things I can do to confirm the ID and if it is a star, how can I help it survive?

no worries - you could check through the stickies at the top of the ID forum - one link pasted here for your convenience - there are a few ID threads, hitch hiker ID

also google images - do a search on tunicates and the stars

the star if thats what it is , is a filter feeder , it will scavenge the rock work and IME they do really well left to their own devices

Thanks guys. Last night when the moonlights came on I saw 4 more of the "snails/turnicates" moving about. They almost look like snails with shells that are too small...nothing more than a cap on top of their back. It sounds like either way they are OK for the tank.

If there are baby snails hatching in my tank will they find their own shells in the substrate or do I need to provide some?

I also saw a third tentacle come from underneath the rock :)

    missionsix,

I googled some pictures and that is exactly what they look like. It sounds like they are good for the aquarium and if I get too many they are easy to give away. Does that all sound right?
