I have been setting up a new sump/fuge in my basement and have been doing alot of research on the forums for drain and return issues. I have a standard 1" bulkhead for drain. I will be running a distance of about 11' . I have a danner mag drive 24 on the way which will have a ball valve to adjust flow if necessary. Is there anything special i need to do with the drain? I am using sch 40 to get to the sump. The pipe will travel from the tank, through the floor then travel parallel to the floor for about 7' then 90 deg down about 2' to the sump. I am now a little concerned that the drain water will be crashing way too hard into the sump. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1" pipe will only drain around 960 GPH. As far as water crashing into the tank I would submerse the pipe down into the sump where it would minimize the splashing. I know there are others on here that have done things similar to what you are doing. I am sure one of them will chime in and let you know what their experience was and what they done to resolve the issue if there was one.

BTW am I understanding this correctly. you will be traveling about 11 ft total with only 4' of it being vertical? If that is the case I really dont see an issue.

Cool thanks...The sump I ordered (ORCA) has a hose fitting that drains into a sock though. I can always alter it though :) but that is when I get myself into real trouble lol.

Ok the drain comes down from the tank about 2' then I will have a 90 Deg to the hole i drilled in the wall. Then aanother 90 deg to bring through the floor. I will have the pvc travel through the floor joists at a slight angle for about 7' then another 90 deg with a 2' flex hose which will drop into the sump. Will I run into any problems with this set up? I am still in the planning phase except for the holes in the wall :) and a new sump purchase and pump...Guess I am a little beyong the planning stage...Happy Thanksgiving all

Your drain line is too small in diameter. Use 1 1/4" or bigger. I used to run a Mag 24 with a 1" return, because that's what comes off of the pump. HUGE mistake. Use 1 1/2" return plumbing to the tank, then T-off to 3/4" for the final connections.

Is this for your 75 gallon tank? If so, the 24 is way too big of a pump, however, reducing the flow on the return side of the pump will not damage it. You'll be surprised how much water it pumps. It could overflow my tank with two 1" drains. ;)

I went with the mag 24 because of the distance to travel. I can't get bigger than the 1" drain through the floor but once through the floor I can increase to 1 1/2". Will that help?

Like yamaharider73 said, 4' up is no big deal, and the horizontal run is not a big factor, either. A 1" return line will be very restrictive, though. A 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" drain would work if you can't run two separate lines.

You should have enough excess flow to run extra reactors with no problem.

Also, use a short section of flex somewhere after the pump to reduce vibration.

I was planning on using all flex hose for the return. I am now worried about the drain. Don't know if I can get bigger than the 1" behind the tank stand and wall without moving the tank
