I know it is ugly right now but i think it will be great for all the sand dwellers i have and help to keep the tank clearer of dead spots and detritus build up.

I took a shelf unit that has long serrations in it and lifted most of my LR off my LS. I think/hope the shelf will eventually be covered by coraline algae and you wont notice it except for the straight lines it has compared to everything else.

So far all my sand dwellers seem to love the extra room.

An extra benefit is that it moved my LR closer to my lighting.

    what do you think?

I like the idea! As long as the plastic is tank safe it's an awesome plan!!! :D

I love the idea, and will probably do similar soon if it all check out ok. I know many clear / translucent industrial plastics have BPAs in them, would that hurt the tank? BPAs have gotten a lot of press recently as a link to cancer in humans....

But you know, I used to snorkel at some nasty ass polluted beaches... it's amazing what a marine ecosystem will tolerate aside from NO compounds and rapid fluctuations of anything.

Let us know how it goes!

you could take the shelf out and coat it in some sort of reef safe concrete to help it blend in more! Just an idea..

So far so good. Some of the corals are taking a while to bounce back from the stress of the move and being in a new location in the tank but i think they will pull through.

Coating the shelf is a great idea but i dont think i can go through a total move again unless i am forced to.

The sand dwellers and even the fish seem to like the extra room on the sand. I left one larger rock under the shelf for the star fish to live under.

    I think it looks good

and as we all know coralline loves plastics, acrylics etc more than it loves rock work added to the fact that Zoanthids will spread and the other corals will get larger
that shelf will fade into the background very quickly IMO
