So I'm looking at upgrading from a 55g to a 120g tank, I've a few questions about doing this.

    1) how loing should i excpect the cycling of new tank to take if I'm moving aboiut 40# of established rock from 55g? (with about 100# of dry rock) basically im wondering how long ill have to run both systems.

    2) should i use new sand?

    3) My current sump has a fuge in it with mangroves/chaeto and DSB, should i move it to the new tank right away, or wait until its cycled. I have a spare sump but ide like to put the nice one on new tank right away rather than putting the spare on then swapping it out later.

+1 to the advice from Telgar. I did almost the same thing when I upgraded from a 75 to a 150. Except I did everything including transferring livestock in one day. Did not see any cycle. The nitrates jumped up a little from stirring the rocks around, but nothing else. All inhabitants survived.

The question is are you moving ALL your live rock from your old tank to the new? That LR is your bio filter. It supports the bio load you have now. So if you move all of it, then there will be no change. Move as much of the water as you can. Test levels before, and get new saltwater to the same levels to avoid shock to the inhabitants, and not much will change.

If you are only moving some, then you will see a change.

thx for info its better news than i expected, i was thinking i would have to move it slow, but i guess it makes sense if i move it all at once its basically the same thing just more water. picked up the new tank today and its sump/fuge setup is way nicer than mine so i will just set it up and when i take down 55 sell the old sump.
