Great job Heather! Now just wait and let your tank adjust itself for the next two months. Monitor the tank every couple of days by testing. This is the go slow part of the deal.

My sand is starting to turn brown where the light hits it, but I only have 15 watts on the tank right now. Is this normal when cycling sand? What can I do or get to help keep it clean?

Yes your tank is going thru a normal process probly due to the substrate change. Try siphoning it off when you do a water change

Brown diatoms will disappear when the silicate from the sand is eliminated. No need to do anything but wait it out.
