I am getting a good deal on some Fiji Rock. As far as i can tell, from conversation from the previous owner, No meds were used and tank is being taken apart due to financial hardships. What should i look for when i see the rocks in person?

Is the rock still considered live? Has it been taken out of the mother tank? If so, how is it being stored? It may need to be recured in order to go into your tank without creating a nice big cycle. LR tends to do that anyway.....with die off during transport.

Looks dry, which means it's no longer live rock, and is dead, base rock.

Never know where it's been, I'd bleach it. Then just re-cure once you rinse and dry thoroughly for a few days. If you have an established tank you can just put the clean rock in the tank and it will become live rock.

im guessing the rock needs to be cycled. I will probably clean it off. I have not started my tank yet. So this would be perfect i think. How long can rock be left out of its environment? My thinking is that as long as you realize that you being your cycle again it can be out for a while...

What are some steps of cleaning and re-curing rock? just bleach, scrub, rinse, clean, rinse again...then place in tank of ro water and add source of amonia to begin cycle?

Soak rocks in a bleach solution for 24 hours.

Rinse thoroughly, then let sit in fresh RO water for 24 hours.

    Dry for 24-48 hours.

Then I rinsed mine in salt water and placed in the tank.

Add yourself a damsel and he'll start your cycle. Then once cycled go buy a very nice purple / pink coralline covered rock, scrape it and you'll seed your tank with coralline.

if its dry, its dead, which in turn needs to cure and be incorporated in an established enviroment for some time before it can be considered live rock. didnt relize the above was posted, good way of words ZachB

The pictures are kind of small. From what I can tell it doesn't look like the best fiji rock I have ever seen. Base rock typically runs $2/lb from a LFS around here.

Base rock, or rock infested with aiptaisa and other nastiness that doesn't look as good as what is in that picture goes up to around $7-10 per pound around here. Granted, that isn't the best looking fiji, but could go nicely as the base of a stack.
